Cap Convex, expanding with age, smooth, sometimes cracked, whitish to pale buff, to about 10 cm across Gills Adnate or slightly decurrent, whitish then pale brown Stem +/- equal, fibrous, with a fleshy apical ring, whitish Flesh Firm, whitish Smell Pleasant, nutty, sweetish, like old dregs of red wine: Roger Phillips compares the smell to old wine casks. Taste Nutty Season All year Distribution Infrequent Habitat On living and dead wood from deciduous trees Spore Print Hazel brown Microscopic Features Spores ellipsoidal, smooth (8.5-10.5) x (5-6) µm2. Basidia slenderly club shaped. Gill edge cystidia club shaped, broad to slender. Gill face cystidia similar to GEC but with a small rounded protuberance on the end. Edibility Edible, very good
